Short Answer:

It is usually due to one of the following:

  • The payment type was check, money order, or some other manual payment method.
  • Your store is not connected, or configured to use a gateway (a.k.a. real-time credit card processing).

Detailed Explanation:

  • If your store is set to accept physical checks, money orders, Paypal (Simple), etc... then these will always come in NOT marked as paid.  When you receive the payment from the shopper, you can manually mark that order as paid.
  • In the case that the shopper paid with a credit card, and it is not marked as paid, then this is likely because your shopping cart software is not connected to a gateway. To connect your gateway, please see the related questions below

If for some reason, you did not have your gateway connected, and orders were not being marked as paid, then you will need to process these orders manually.  This typically involves manually processing the credit directly from within your gateway account (contact your gateway for instructions on this).  If you do not have the credit card information or number, you may need to contact the shopper to get it.
