Short Answer:

As seen in the manager under  Items list > Category drop-down menu

These will display items that have lost their parent(s) categories.  In  other words, at some point, you deleted a Category that contained Items, and  those Items were not assigned to any other categories.

Detailed Explanation:

First of all, you probably want to make sure that whenever you delete a Category,  that you have those products assigned to other categories or delete/disable  them.  If they are already orphaned, then you should probably either assign  them to a Category, or mark them as disabled; otherwise they will continue  to show up in the search results if shoppers search for those products on yourwebsite.
