Short Answer:

This problem only applies if you are using the inventory system. There are various things which can cause this problem.

 
1. Renaming an Attribute Group’s external name.
 
2. Renaming any of the individual Attributes names.
 
3. Sorting the order of the Attribute Groups for an item (on the Item edit page).

Detailed Explanation:

To avoid this problem from occurring, you should delete the Attribute Group and recreate it if you want to change the catalog View (external) name, or edit any of the Attribute names.  To resort attributes for an item, simply un-attach all attribute groups from that product, save, then re-attach the attributes in the order you want them, and then save again.
