Short Answer:

Go to SETTINGS > Payment Methods.  Then select your gateway, and configure its settings.

Detailed Explanation:

On this page you can determine which credit cards to accept. By default, the term 'merchant account' usually means Visa and Mastercard, so if you haev a merchant account, you should make sure that you can also accept American Express and Discover first.  If you want to accept Discover, American Express, etc... then you usually need to apply with them directly. If you need help with this, your merchant account provider can usually help you or give you some direction.

Now that you have selected the credit cards you want to accept, click the radio button next to the gateway you are using (see related article if you are not sure what gateway you have). Then click the CONFIGURE link next to your gateway. On that page you will be asked a few questions about entering your gateway's username and password.
